Psalms of Lament

Responding to difficulties reveals our hearts. Deuteronomy 8:2-3 says, “And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not. And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.” The way we respond to trying times demonstrates much about our view of life, death and most importantly our faith in a sovereign Lord. It is easy to show faith when our lives are simple and void of difficulty. Do we still respond with unyielding dedication when our heart is deeply broken?

The Psalms is a great collection of praise and worship to God. We can turn to these sonnets to express our gratitude. They can aid us in expressing our broken heart. We are not alone in grief. The Psalms are proof that people have been suffering for many, many years. We find in the lament psalms help and hope.
